The lamp needle on the time ribbon is the story's present: the coasts, ice and peoples on the map are those of that moment. When the text looks back or tells ahead, the needle stays, and a hollow ring marks the passage's own time. Where the text tells a region's story again from its beginning, the needle goes back to that beginning: the HUD says so, and a return mark on the ribbon shows the jump.
